PERSPECTIVE OF THE SANTA MARÍA RIVER BASIN

The publication aims to increase interest and awareness of the multiple environmental, economic and social benefits derived from basin management. Their contribution  in terms of  ecosystems, forest production, genetic resources, quantity and quality of water and sustainable agricultural production.

The sustainable use of this water source ensures subsistence  of the populations  contributing to their social and economic development. The water of this basin is essential for agriculture produced in different provinces of the country.

The Santa Maria River Basin  It is located on the Pacific slope in the provinces of Veraguas, Coclé and Herrera. The total drainage area of the basin is 3,400.63 Km2, from its source to its mouth in the sea.  The average elevation of the basin is 200 meters above sea level, and the highest point is in the Cordillera Central with an elevation of 1,528 meters above sea level.
